How to Practice Yoga at Home.

There are so many benefits of going to a regular Yoga class but sometimes life happens and we can't make it. As we practice more regularly we become more aware of how we are feeling and reacting to things. In a home practice we can choose what our body needs in that particular day or moment. Here are a few tips to getting started and staying consistent in your home practice.

  • Keep it simple. You don't need a whole Yoga room, with mood lighting, candles and incense. (although that would be lovely) You simply need a space to roll out your mat.
  • A short practice on a regular basis is better than a long practice once year! We don't always have time to travel to and from a class in our crazy busy lives.  The great thing about practicing at home is that you don't need to travel anywhere. If you only have 10 or 15 minutes to do a little moving and breathing it's all good. If you do want a longer practice, nothing is stopping you from indulging.
  • Remember what you did in class. Not sure if know what to do? no worries, just remember a few of the movements you did in your class. Maybe your teacher does a set sequence of movements that you enjoyed that you could try out at home. And if that doesn't work just follow the formula below...
  • Move in all directions. Even in a short practice try to move in all directions. Do a forward bend, back bend, move side to side,  a few twists and then lay down in Savasana (very important!) An example: A few rounds of sun salutation, standing or seated side stretch, supine twist and lay on the floor. Simple!
  • Include your favourite and your least favourite. (Because the latter is the one you probably need the most.) Ok so you definitely should add your favourite pose and on a good day adding your least favourite one is going to improve your practice in leaps and bounds.
  • Enjoy! One of top tips for almost everything. Move your body, breathe, stretch and self indulge in the wonders of your unique and beautiful body. Own your practice, its yours forever and always evolving. Be playful, be kind and love yourself.
